Interesting Facts

We live in the city of San Pedro Sula. This city has about 550,000 in population and is large enough to have an international airport (an international airport here in not like one in the states). San Pedro means saint peter, and tells of the catholic influence here. Sula is the name of the valley; a very large and beautiful valley. The climate here is very hot, because we are in a valley close to the coast. It is about 35 miles to the Caribbean Sea from here. We can look from our house and see mountains.

We have 70 churches here and 11 "campo blancos" or outstations. We prefer to call them baby churches, as most of them will soon be churches. Our work here is 22 years old and we started with 1 church. Sixteen years ago, there were 5 churches and now there are 70. Our goal is to have 100 by the year 2003.

We also have two Christian elementary schools here. There are 300 children in grades 1-6. The school year begins in February and ends in October. This school is financed by people sponsoring a child for $20.00 per month. Twenty dollars per month provides a quality education, nutritional supplements every day, a uniform that they wear to school and some help on their school supplies. We still have over 120 that need sponsors. They are taught by Christian teachers and they are taught the word of God every day. Most of these children have already accepted Jesus as their personal Savior, which is the most important ministry of this school.

We are using an extension Bible Institute program for the training of leaders in our churches. There are two levels of this study. Some of these will go on and become pastors. We currently have over 50 that are studying in this program.

We have started a resident Bible College as well. This is exclusively for the training of new pastors. We are opening several new churches each year through the Bible School. We opened September 18th 1995 for classes. We had the 5th graduation in December. There are 11 students currently studying for the full-time ministry.
