User Reviews about God of War Chains of Olympus
I got a psp for my birthday a while back and along with I decided to pick up God of War chains of olympus. Well, my first thoughts when playing the game were damn, this is pretty hard. I first played GOW on my friends ps2. So thats why I got it. It took a while to get used to the controls. After that the whole game was really easy, even on God mode (the hardest mode). Basically all you do is run around and jump while pressing a series of buttons.(mostly square)
The combos are okay. That, again is hindered by the psp's lack of buttons. This simplifies the combos but doesn't have the awesomeness of the ps2 and ps3 GOW games.
I have played all of the console God of war games I, II, III, and now chains of olympus.
The graphics are okay. But that is pitting the psp against giants like the xbox360 and the ps3. As far as handhelds are concerned, chains of olympus is one of the best. Its graphics are far superior to most of the other psp games.
As for the gameplay, its pretty good. The cutscenes are realistic, great load times and well, great overall.
graphics:4.5/5
combos:3/5
load times:5/5 {practically no load times}
fun: 4/5 (too easy for my liking)
my rating 4/5 (could have been better)
Overall, I think that God of war chains of olympus is a great game. If you get a chance to buy it, go for it.
Well, thanks for reading and I hope this review was helpful to you. -- I think it's great....
This is a very good game !! I had played every game of the god of war, and this one is good as the others ones, I really recommend this game -- very awesome game
I don't often play games on my PSP as I just don't have the time or need to do so, however, every now and then, the need and time will arise, and it's always nice to have a great game to play when they do. This game however, `GOD OF WAR : Chains Of Olympus', is the very reason I sought out a PSP in the first place. As anyone who has seen my profile, games list, or read my reviews on the console GOW games knows, I am an absolutely rabid GOW fan. With that in mind, let's talk about .....
THE GOOD : There's plenty of it. Everything that there is to like about Kratos and his venomous rage on the Playstation consoles is here to like on the PSP, albeit in a smaller and shorter format. The developers, in adding some new elements to Kratos' story, didn't tamper much with the tried and true formula of the previous games. The same buttons still execute the same moves and combos, there's still magic to use, the bosses are either large or present a formidable challenge or both, the monsters (and buttons) are fun to mash, the puzzles still exist, the treasures and challenges of the Gods are back, the scenery is still captivating as are the graphics, there's still plenty to explore and discover, the same methods exist to level up, and yes, even the sex mini game makes it to the PSP. But while this sounds like a straight rehash of the console games (and to be fair, it is to an extent), what keeps it fresh are the new settings, villains & creatures and some new magic and weapons. Of these new weapons, and keeping in mind that this game came out well before GOW 3, Zeus' Gauntlet is a fun precursor to the Nemean Cestus in GOW 3 and helps translate some of that fun to the PSP, in arrears if you haven't played this prior to GOW 3. Because let's face it - there's nothing quite like brutally pounding and smashing an enemy to a pulp with what equates to a brass knuckle for your entire fist and forearm! Some of the new magic in your arsenal is also fun to play with too, though it plays like a variation of some of the other magic you've seen before or will again. Regardless, it doesn't take away from the fun. While this isn't a `playable' aspect of the game some of the fun is had in what the narrative fills in with regards to Kratos' overall story arc. Not meaning to keep referencing GOW 3, but after playing GOW : COO, it becomes clearer why Hades hates Kratos so much and why Cronos feels the same. After all, we all saw Cronos in the first GOW and he was indifferent if anything to Kratos in that installment. I've never been one to pay much attention to the story in a videogame, because, let's face it, I'm not playing for the narrative, but this is one of the few examples that I can think of that I found that enhanced the overall experience. Speaking of enhancements, this game seems to set the bar on graphics for the PSP. It's undoubtedly one of the best looking overall games I've seen on the PSP. Though, admittedly, I don't play a ton of PSP-based games, I do look at a lot of screenshots, and check out the video reviews whenever possible. So taking all of what I've just mentioned into consideration, the GOW experience translates very well to the PSP. For the most part....
THE BAD : Not a whole heck of a lot to be honest. But while GOW : COO is one of the best action adventure games for the PSP (if not THE best), it's not without its' flaws (nothing really is, is it?). For starters, the game is pretty short. The average player should be able to get through this in about 5-6 hours. The levels are also simple, linear and can be pretty straightforward. To someone who craves a full-on GOW experience, this can be a little disappointing. And unfortunately, some of what makes this game so successful, also works against it. That being that, since much of the same gameplay, methodology, mechanics and abilities holdover from the console games, it can feel a little like a bite-sized version of the same sweet candy bar you're used to eating when you have a craving for it : it has the same flavor and hits the spot, but doesn't totally fill the hole. Think of it as GOW : Lite. To an extent, this is understandable, as you can't expect everything and then some going from a console game to a handheld, but at the same time, I did expect a little more. Or at least more that was different. It was nice to have a new weapon to use and a new magic or two, but why not more than one new weapon or the limited number of new magics they gave you? It would seem to me that this was a great opportunity to branch out a little on the series without going too far, but at the same time, add more new elements to it to really make this a `new title' instead of just a `new chapter'. All in all though, my complaints are minimal and few, because this is really a fantastic game when you get right down to it.
THE BOTTOM LINE : Having played this game about 2-3 times now, I can honestly say that in retrospect, I guess the majority of criticisms I have with the game are because of what it naturally compares to - the console versions of the series. On its' own, this is a near-flawless game for the platform it's on. It really is. If you want a great, top-of-the-line game for your PSP, you'd be hard pressed to find a better on than this. `GOD OF WAR : Chains Of Olympus' sets the bar pretty high for Action / Adventure on the PSP. Will `GOD OF WAR : Ghost Of Sparta' be able to top it?
-- A Stripped-Down Version Of GOD OF WAR, But Fun All The Same
This game is a truly wonderful game. It captures the great gameplay and experience of its console counterparts well. It is on the short side of around 6-7 hours but for a handheld thats to be expected. If you love God of War or action games, this is a must purchase. -- The best PSP title available
This game is so much fun. I wish they made all the other parts of this game for psp I would definately order them cause it so much fun to play. -- God of War Chains of Olympus
