User Reviews about Final Fantasy II

This game is amazingly fun, but only if you have patience. This game is TOUGH!!!!! I can't count the number of times i went into a completely open room, which is a trap where your random encounter probablility skyrockets. the story is a little freaky, but still cool. the Emperor of Palamecia has summoned Monsters from the bowels of Hell, using dark magic. A rebellion was formed, and now Firion, Guy, and Maria are on a quest to stop him. These three are your only permanent part members. Most of the others die. these include Minwu the White Wizard, a dragoon....whose name has slipped my mind, and Josef, a stong villager who would be considered a Black Belt class. Once you enter the emperors castle inside a cyclone, which threatens your home base and kill him, half of his soul goes to heaven, and becomes ruler of one of the castles, and the other half goes to Hell and conquers it. (which i don't see as possible in either case.) You find this out during the Soul Of rebirth sidequest, whn you get to play as all of the fallen characters. A great game, but a bit on the challenging side. As far as final bosses go, the dark half of the emperor's soul isn't too much to fuss about. I myself haven't faced the Light side yet. (still stuck at the beginning of the SOR sidequest. Shows you how hard it is.....]=|) The only other gripe i have is that you can't rearrange your party members. -- Final Fantasy 2 Made even better.
I've been really enjoying this remake and unlike most games I feel like the pro's for outweigh the con's. For those of you new to FF2 the game starts out with the Empire basically rampaging all over the world and destroying your home town, your party of four escapes the carnage to immediately die... Now the real game begins; I enjoyed the combat system for the most part. The whole concept of you reap what you sow, if you use swords your swords will lvl if you use magic you gain mp if you take damage your hp grows. The issues with this however is there is no solid lvling system and at times I would have to tactically attack my own party to increase their skills. My only other gripe was the forth party member, reason being its very unconsistent, you have several forth party members come and go, so first time through can be slightly annoying if you spend time and effort upgrading their skills and gear for them to merely leave an hour or two later. In comparison to the original NES game the graphics are amazing. I got several hours of enjoyment out of this game is hope you enjoy it as well. -- Great Remake
I am a long-time fan of the Final Fantasy series. FFVII was my first game, since then I've played almost every single title in the series, including spin-offs. My main reason for getting this game was for completion's sake. If you are new to Final Fantasy games in general, I recommend starting with the newer, 3D ones, such as FFVII and beyond, and then working your way back to the 2D ones if you are a completionist.

Unfortunately, this game is the weakest in the series. In my opinion it's only worth it if you're a big fan of the series and just want to be able to say you've played them all. The game was made in the NES era, and then basically just given a graphical overhaul for the PSP, so you're basically playing an NES game with updated graphics and sounds. The leveling system is horrible to say the least, it may sound good on paper, but in practice it is frustrating. The encounter rate is fairly high, and the storyline is shallow and primitive, so (if you play without cheating) there's nothing to do other than grind by hitting yourself for hours to increase your stats (yes you read that correctly), and trudge through monotonous dungeons being mobbed by encounters every few steps (which is frustrating because you level effectively by hitting and healing yourself, not by repeatedly battling monsters, who give no EXP in the traditional sense).

Otherwise, there are FAQs websites online where you can legitimately download saved game files (that other people played or created with save editors and cheat devices) and load them up on your PSP along with the game that you legally own. I found one such saved game file in which the game started at the beginning of the storyline (allowing you to experience the entire storyline), but all my characters' stats were maxed out and buff from the outset. I recommend doing something like that, just to play through the game once for completion's sake without having to grind. -- Worth it for long-time fans and for completion's sake
From a lot of the reviews I had read for this game, I was kind of nervous to attempt to play it. The complaints about the change in the leveling system alone were enough to give me second thoughts. However, I bit the bullet, and boy am I glad I did.

First, like the remake of Final Fantasy for the PSP, this game looks great. Yes, it is 2d, but there isn't anything wrong with 2d games, especially if it is well done, which this is. The members of your party are all unique looking, the enemies were nicely detailed.

I was also pleasantly surprised with the one-off leveling change. I guess, having played a couple of elder scrolls games had helped me wrap my head around the idea that the more your party members use individual weapon types or magic, the more their proficiency in each of these areas increase. Although, I have to admit that the adjustment wasn't immediate. I'm a player that usually likes to conserve spells and take as little damage as possible. In this game, however, it is essential that you take damage during battle, or else it takes forever to increase your max HP.

One of my biggest complaints about the first game was a lack of character or story development. I was quite pleased with both in FF2. Yes, there are some plot-holes, and some of the characters are a little inconsistent, or hastily thrown together, but this game was definitely a step in the right direction. And, if nothing else, this was the game that introduced Chocobos to the FF series! So, again this game is a must for anyone who is interested in seeing how the Final Fantasy series has progressed over the years. -- Far better than I was expecting
Pros:
Good Graphics
Excellent Remake of the original NES version
Nice cutscenes

Con's:
-"Leveling" system is not like other FF games
-"Where to go" can become confusing at times.
-"Random Battles" can be frustrating
-No save-points. Can only save on the map or at a specific point can prove frustrating.
-Abit on the boring side

Nice game to purchase at the used price.
-- Better than Final Fantasy 3
